The flat smile Keisha flashed let her sister know she heard her the entire time but didn’t manage to say a word. Her sister’s blatant ignorance caused her to roll her eyes.

“We’re almost to Aunt Darlene’s house and you haven’t said a word. Are you gonna say anything?”

“No, I don’t feel like talking,” Keisha answered.

“So, you’re just not gonna say anything the entire time we’re here?” Alonzo asked as he took an exit on the I-71 to lead them directly to their aunt’s house.

“Look, I’m in this truck with y’all? Ain’t I? You better be glad I’m even here after what y’all pulled.” Keisha shut off her iPod and stuffed it in her pink Juicy Couture purse. She had a feeling she wasn’t going to get a chance to listen to it any time soon.

“Come on, Keisha. You know we had to do it like this. Otherwise, you would’ve made up some excuse not to come,” Alonzo said as Kennedi nodded her head. She couldn’t stand it when her brother and sister joined forces against her.

“Whatever, Zoe. You two planning to come home behind my back was just wrong and you know it!” She crossed her arms.

“With the way you act about visiting, you really gave us no choice,” Kennedi reiterated.

Keisha didn’t respond. She turned her head to look out the window and was truly at a loss for words. She knew they only wanted to come home because of Jessie’s illness but, as far as she was concerned, she didn’t see it that way. Seeing Darlene and Jessie evoked a pain Keisha felt in the pit of her stomach.

They rode in silence until Alonzo made a right-hand turn onto their street.

“Now, I know you and Uncle Jessie don’t get along but can you at least try while we’re here,” he pleaded.

Keisha took the opportunity to roll her eyes and huff. “Fine! Whatever you want!”
